STUDIO ACCESS

The Yellowknife Guild of Arts and Crafts maintains studio space dedicated to both pottery and mixed media.  The pottery studio is fully equipped with pottery wheels, a slab roller, large tables and other tools and equipment for both throwing and handbuilding.  The mixed media studio is a bright space with large tables and counters and a variety of tools and equipment.

Studio access requires current adult full membership; studio access is not available to casual or child members. Refer to the Policy - Pottery Studio Access and Fees, Policy - Fibre and Mixed Media Studio Access and Fees, and the summaries below for details on the types of access available, associated fees, and eligibility for participation.

POTTERY SCHEDULED OPEN STUDIO SESSIONS

Scheduled pottery open studio sessions operate on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm, Thursday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.  Each session is hosted by an experienced studio potter who is available to answer questions, ensure that equipment is used safely, and supervise studio chores.

Participants are expected to contribute approximately 15 minutes of volunteer time to cleaning and other studio chores during each visit to the studio. Participants are also expected to contribute approximately 3 hours per month to volunteer tasks necessary to support operation of the studio, such as hosting scheduled open studio, recycling clay and making glazes.

Scheduled open studio sessions are intended for potters with sufficient skill and experience to work independently with a minimum of assistance. This skill and experience is usually gained through completion of a wheel or handbuilding class at the Guild.  All prospective studio potters must contact the pottery representative for assessment of their qualifications and approval to participate in scheduled open studio sessions.

The fee for scheduled open studio access is $40 per month payable online.  Students enrolled in specified pottery classes may attend scheduled open studio sessions for free until completion of the class.  Scheduled open studio sessions may be cancelled during holiday periods or if a studio host is unavailable and do not usually run during the summer months.

MIXED MEDIA SCHEDULED OPEN STUDIO SESSIONS

Scheduled mixed media open studio sessions operate on a drop-in basis on Thursday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.  All disciplines are welcome during these sessions.

Scheduled fibre open studio sessions operate on a drop-in basis on Friday mornings from 9:00 am to 11:00 am.  Additional sessions may occasionally be scheduled for Friday evenings between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm.  These sessions are restricted to clean and quiet disciplines such as knitting, basketry, and weaving.

Each mixed media open studio is hosted by member with experience in one or more mixed media disciplines.  Participants are expected to be able to work independently on their own projects as the host may not have the skills necessary to assist with all disciplines.

The drop-in fee is $5 per session payable online.  Sessions may be cancelled during holiday periods or if a host is not available and do not run during the summer months.

POTTERY AND/OR MIXED MEDIA FULL STUDIO ACCESS

Members holding full studio access privileges can use Guild studio space whenever the space is not in use for classes, workshops or other Guild events.  The fee for full studio access is $60 per month payable online.

Participants are expected to devote approximately 15 minutes of volunteer time to cleaning and other studio chores during each visit to the studio.  Full studio potters are also expected to contribute more than 3 hours per month to volunteer tasks necessary to support operation of the studio, such as hosting scheduled open studio, recycling clay and making glazes.

Full access privileges must be approved by the pottery rep and/or mixed media rep to ensure that members using studio space independently possess the skills necessary to use available equipment and tools without supervision.  Completion of a probationary period including an orientation session, training sessions, and studio hosting is required prior to applying for access as a full studio potter.

Requests for such arrangements require approval by the Board of Directors and are considered on case by case basis.  Approval requires current Guild membership at the full adult level and skill and qualification sufficient to work independently in the pottery studio.  A drop-in fee of $10 applies for each session of up to 3 hours in duration.
